How to Convert Your Overseas Driver’s Licence in the Northern Territory

New to the NT and ready to drive? The Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) manages all driver licence conversions. A NAATI certified translation is required if your overseas licence is not in English. Here is your complete guide.

Who Can Apply? Australian citizens, permanent residents, New Zealand citizens, and temporary visa holders with driving rights. The overseas licence must be valid at the time of application.

Step 1 — NAATI Certified Translation The NT MVR requires NAATI certified translations for all non-English licences. Required details include the translator’s NAATI credential number, name, signature, stamp, and certification statement. Digital PDF accepted.

Step 2 — Gather Your Documents Original overseas licence, NAATI certified translation, proof of identity, proof of NT residential address, and visa documentation if required.

Step 3 — Visit an NT Motor Vehicle Registry Office All conversions must be completed in person. Office locations and information are available at nt.gov.au/driving.

Step 4 — Eyesight Test Performed at the registry office on the day.

Step 5 — Pay the Fee Approximately $40–$54 depending on your licence class and chosen duration.

Step 6 — Receive Your Licence Your NT licence is mailed within approximately 5–10 business days. A temporary paper licence is issued on the day.
