How to Convert Your Overseas Driver’s Licence in Tasmania

The 3-Month Rule You must convert your overseas licence within 3 months of becoming a Tasmanian resident to avoid additional testing requirements.

Who Is Eligible? Australian citizens, permanent residents, New Zealand citizens, and temporary visa holders with driving rights. Licence must be valid at the time of application.

Step 1 — NAATI Certified Translation Service Tasmania accepts only NAATI certified translations for non-English licences. The translation must include the translator’s credential number, name, signature, stamp, and a certification statement. Digital PDF accepted.

Step 2 — Gather Your Documents Original overseas licence, NAATI certified translation, proof of identity, proof of Tasmanian residential address, and visa documentation if applicable.

Step 3 — Visit a Service Tasmania Centre In-person attendance is required. Bookings and centre locations are available at service.tas.gov.au.

Step 4 — Eyesight Test Conducted at the centre on the day of your appointment.

Step 5 — Pay the Fee Approximately $42–$55 depending on licence class and duration.

Step 6 — Receive Your Licence Posted within 5–10 business days. Temporary paper licence provided on the day.
