How to Convert Your Overseas Driver’s Licence in Queensland

If you are relocating to Queensland and your driver’s licence was issued overseas in a language other than English, you will need a NAATI certified translation before the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will process your application. Here is everything you need to know.

The 3-Month Rule Queensland requires you to convert your overseas licence within 3 months of establishing residency in the state. Failing to do so may result in additional testing requirements regardless of your driving history.

Who Is Eligible? Australian citizens, permanent residents, New Zealand citizens, and holders of temporary visas that permit driving in Australia are all eligible to convert. Your overseas licence must be current and valid at the time of your visit.

Step 1 — NAATI Certified Translation TMR requires a NAATI certified translation for any overseas licence not issued in English. The translation must contain the translator’s NAATI credential number, their official stamp, full name, signature, and date of translation. A certified digital PDF is accepted.

Step 2 — Gather Your Documents You will need your original overseas licence, your NAATI certified translation, proof of identity, proof of Queensland residential address dated within 3 months, and visa documentation if you are not a citizen or permanent resident.

Step 3 — Visit a Transport and Motoring Service Centre Conversions must be completed in person at a Queensland Transport and Motoring Service Centre. Bookings are available at qld.gov.au/transport.

Step 4 — Eyesight Test A simple vision test is performed at the centre on the day of your visit.

Step 5 — Pay the Fee Fees in Queensland are approximately $50–$62 depending on your licence class and chosen duration.

Step 6 — Receive Your Licence Your Queensland licence card is mailed to your address. A temporary paper receipt is provided on the day for immediate use.

Testing Required — All Other Countries Applicants holding licences from countries not on this list must pass the Queensland Road Rules Test. A practical driving assessment may also be required depending on your driving history and experience.
