How to Convert Your Overseas Driver’s Licence in South Australia

New to South Australia and ready to hit the road? If your overseas licence is in a language other than English, you will need a NAATI certified translation before Service SA will process your conversion. This guide explains the full process for South Australian licence conversions.

The 3-Month Rule South Australia requires overseas licence holders to convert within 3 months of becoming a state resident. Do not delay as this may affect your eligibility for direct conversion.

Who Is Eligible? Citizens, permanent residents, New Zealand nationals, and temporary visa holders with driving rights may all apply. Your overseas licence must be current and valid.

Step 1 — NAATI Certified Translation Service SA requires a NAATI certified translation for non-English licences. The translation must include the translator’s NAATI credential number, name, signature, stamp, and certification date. A digital PDF is accepted.

Step 2 — Gather Your Documents Original overseas licence, NAATI certified translation, proof of identity, proof of South Australian address dated within 3 months, and visa or residency documentation if required.

Step 3 — Visit a Service SA Centre All applications must be lodged in person. Appointments can be made at sa.gov.au/servicecentres.

Step 4 — Eyesight Test Performed at the centre on the day.

Step 5 — Pay the Fee Approximately $46–$57 depending on licence duration.

Step 6 — Receive Your Licence Your SA licence arrives by post within approximately 5–10 business days. A temporary receipt is provided on the day.

Direct Conversion Countries — No Tests Required United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, South Korea, and Japan.

Testing Required — All Other Countries All other nationalities must pass the Road Rules Knowledge Test. A practical drive test may also be required at the discretion of Service SA.
